Urgency of Forming a Fact-Finding Team in the Andrie Yunus Case

The Advocacy Team for Democracy (TAUD) is urging the government to promptly form an independent Fact-Finding Team (TPF) to comprehensively uncover the acid attack on human rights activist Andrie Yunus. They note that TPFs have historically played a key role in revealing past human rights violations, such as the murder of Munir Said, the Kanjuruhan incident, and the Cicak-Buaya conflict at the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

TAUD representative Gema Gita Persada stated that establishing this independent fact-finding team aims to expose the intellectual authors behind the Andrie Yunus case. He believes a TPF would provide a more comprehensive investigation into the suspected chain of command.

TAUD is convinced that the acid attack on Andrie Yunus was orchestrated by parties with power in certain institutions. Therefore, the possibility of a chain of command must be traced by an independent TPF involving civil society and figures of integrity.

“The push for a TPF is a way to hold the state accountable for demonstrating its commitment to handling human rights violation cases,” he said at the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) office in Jakarta on Monday, 30 March 2026.

According to him, forming an independent TPF would not only thoroughly uncover the acid attack case on Andrie Yunus. Gema stated that it is possible that pursuing human rights violence cases through official TPF intervention could prevent similar incidents from recurring.

“So the push to form an independent fact-finding team is not merely to uncover the case, but further to safeguard the continuity of democracy moving forward. We hope the case against Andrie becomes the last one,” he said.

Another TAUD member, Fadhil Alfathan, assessed that there is no reason for the state not to accommodate public aspirations to form an independent TPF in investigating the Andrie Yunus case. According to him, President Prabowo Subianto must promptly and officially establish an independent TPF with clear authority and duties.

“And filled with a composition of integrity figures from various disciplines,” he said at the YLBHI office in Jakarta on Monday, 30 March 2026.

Moreover, he said that two weeks after Andrie Yunus was attacked with acid, there has been no significant progress in the police investigation. The police only announced two field executors as perpetrators on 18 March.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) stated that they have detained four suspects involved in the acid attack on Andrie Yunus. All four are active soldiers serving in the Strategic Intelligence Agency Headquarters Detachment.

According to Fadhil, the stagnation in the law enforcement investigation process is reasonably suspected due to non-juridical factors. He is concerned that political obstacles could hinder the resolution of the investigation up to the chain of command.

“The President can prevent further political excesses by forming an independent fact-finding team in line with the public’s desire for the acid attack case to be revealed with a focus on justice,” said this Jakarta Legal Aid Institute Director.

TAUD also urges the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) to open a pro-justicia investigation process to determine serious human rights violations. In addition, Andrie Yunus’s legal team requests that prosecution be carried out in a general court.

Previously, Deputy Coordinator of KontraS Andrie Yunus was doused with acid by two unidentified individuals on Thursday night, 12 March 2026, on Jalan Salemba I Talang, Central Jakarta. Andrie was then rushed to the Emergency Installation at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) on Friday early morning, 13 March 2026, complaining of burns on his face, neck, chest, back, and both arms, accompanied by vision disturbance in his right eye. The medical report states that Andrie suffered burns covering 24 percent of his body due to corrosive liquid.
