Upset tailor slays his ex-girlfriend

JAKARTA (JP): A woman reportedly had her throat viciously slashed by a former boyfriend near her residence in Kebon Kacang, Central Jakarta, yesterday morning.

Annie Widyawati, 28, an employee of PT Samudera Indonesia, died instantly when her head was almost severed with a sickle, city police spokesman Lt. Col. Iman Haryatna said.

The incident took place when the woman was on the way to work.

"The boyfriend, Tugeris, 30, was immediately arrested by local detectives a few minutes later while hiding at the nearby Ascot Apartments," Iman said.

During preliminary questioning, Tugeris, a tailor at a small textile company, told police investigators that he had been upset for several weeks since Annie's parents had insisted they end their relationship, Iman said.

"His disappointment reached its peak when he was informed by another friend that Annie already had a new man in her life," Iman said.

At around 7 a.m. yesterday, he rushed to Annie's house, which was not far from his home in the Dukuh Pinggir area of Kebon Melati district.

He was armed with a sickle.

Witnesses said that the couple were involved in a heated argument before Tugeris took out a sickle and slashed Annie's throat with it, Iman said.

Tugeris is currently being detained at the Tanah Abang police subprecinct for further investigation. (bsr)
