Uproar Over KRL Green Line 'Chaos' and 'Horror', Transport Minister Issues This Directive
Good news has arrived for users of the KRL line between Tanah Abang and Rangkasbitung, known as the Green Line. The government plans to increase the train’s carrying capacity by adding larger carriage sets. This step is expected to alleviate the passenger density that has been the main complaint on that route. Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi revealed that he has asked his subordinates to promptly carry out the fleet capacity enhancement. This effort serves as a medium-term solution while waiting for other mass transportation projects that require more time to be realised. “For Tanah Abang, whose homes are in the Rangkasbitung area, I have actually asked Mr Director General (of Railways) to replace the trains with even larger ones, so the carrying capacity is greater. But one of the requirements is that we improve the electrification network,” he said, quoted on Friday (10/4/2026). This capacity enhancement cannot be done instantly because it depends on the readiness of supporting infrastructure. One crucial factor is the electrification system that must be upgraded to support the operation of trains with longer sets. Without it, adding carriages could risk disrupting service reliability. Dudy also emphasised that the electrification improvement will directly impact the train travel frequency. With a more reliable system, the interval between train arrivals or headway can be shortened, thus reducing passenger build-up. “And I really hope that since waiting for the MRT might be a bit long, well, by improving the electrification network, we can replace the carriages with slightly larger ones, with electrification, then the headway can be even shorter. So the carrying capacity will be even greater,” Dudy stated. Meanwhile, from a technical perspective, the project planning is already underway. The government is preparing technical documents that form the basis for implementing the capacity enhancement. This process includes infrastructure adjustments up to station readiness to accommodate longer sets. Director General of Railways Allan Tandiono stated that the planning documents are now in the final stage. This signals that the KRL service enhancement project on that line is approaching the execution phase. The government hopes the entire process can be completed soon so that the benefits can quickly be felt by the public. “For the technical planning documents of the Tanah Abang-Rangkasbitung electrification to accommodate what Mr mentioned earlier for trains with longer stations, those documents will be finished, have been started and will soon be completed,” Allan said.
