Uproar as Woman in Gresik Arrives for Work in ASN Uniform, Turns Out She Was Duped by Fake Appointment Letter
A woman with the initials SE is suspected to be a victim of a fraudulent civil servant (ASN) appointment letter in Gresik, East Java. Despite this, SE arrived at the Gresik Regent’s office compound neatly dressed in her official uniform.
The incident occurred on Monday morning (6/4). SE was shocked by the reality that she was not actually an ASN. It was later discovered that the civil servant appointment letter she carried was fake.
SE’s face immediately soured, filled with disappointment. This happened when guards at the Regent’s Official Residence in Gresik asked about her work placement.
The Head of Protocol and Leadership Communication Section (Prokopim) of the Gresik Regional Secretariat, Imam Basuki, stated that initially, they did not suspect the woman’s arrival. He thought SE was a new civil servant transferred from another agency.
“At first, I thought it was a transferred civil servant. But after questioning, she claimed to be placed in the Public Relations Section, which has not existed for a long time as it has been changed to the Prokopim Section,” Imam told reporters on Wednesday (8/4/2026).
The officers then conducted a further examination of the documents SE brought, including the 2024 civil servant appointment letter that had been legalised.
“From there, we felt something was off and immediately checked the documents in more detail,” said Imam.
The examination results showed irregularities in the document, particularly in the signature of the official listed. Although the official’s name appeared correct, the signature did not match.
“The name is correct, but the signature is different,” he added.
When informed that the letter was suspected to be fake, SE appeared devastated. Her shoulders slumped, her gaze empty, as if she had lost her way. The hopes she had nurtured for so long vanished in minutes, leaving a mix of shame, confusion, and disappointment.
From her statements to the officers, SE is suspected not to be the only victim in this case. There are about 12 to 15 other people who reportedly experienced similar incidents. They were promised to pass the civil servant selection and given appointment letters with different placements within the Gresik Regency government.
In response to the findings, the Gresik Regency government acted swiftly through the Personnel and Human Resources Development Agency (BKPSDM). They immediately conducted further tracing. The Head of BKPSDM Gresik, Agung Endro Dwi Setyo Utomo, emphasised that they are now delving deeper into the case.
