UPNVJ Accelerates Internationalisation with 10 Strategic Programmes and Infrastructure Development

Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jakarta (UPNVJ) is accelerating its internationalisation agenda through 10 strategic programmes encompassing education, research, collaboration, academic mobility, global recognition, and infrastructure development. Rector Prof. Anter Venus stated that the programme, initiated in late 2022, is a crucial step to elevate the Bela Negara Campus from a local and national identity to a more competitive international position. Located in Jakarta as the centre of government, culture, and a national education reference point, UPNVJ views a global vision not as an option but as a strategic necessity. Through acceleration from 2023 to 2026, several targets originally projected to mature in 2026 are being achieved earlier. This acceleration runs parallel with strengthening campus infrastructure, digital services, learning support facilities, and plans for an integrated education and health services area in Tangerang. Prof. Venus explained that UPNVJ’s internationalisation is built through four stages: preparing, engaging, enhancing, and recognising. The initial stage involved reconceptualising the university’s vision to become an excellent, internationally qualified, innovative, competitive institution with a national defence identity for the development of Indonesian society. He noted that the process was not easy for UPNVJ, which only became a state university in 2014 and began effective operations in 2015, but the relatively young institutional age was not a barrier to moving faster. The ten internationalisation programmes include international accreditation, global rankings, adjunct professor programmes, international funding, scientific publications, student exchange, international cooperation, international student admissions, internationally accredited journals, and international classes through double degree and joint degree schemes. In quality standards and recognition, UPNVJ has recorded significant progress through the international accreditation of several study programmes, with 18 programmes, or about 40 per cent of the total, now achieving international accreditation. On academic mobility, UPNVJ has sent 26 students to top 100 world universities through the IISMA programme and receives foreign students from countries including Kazakhstan, Malaysia, and Thailand. International students currently come from Timor Leste, Libya, Yemen, India, and Pakistan, with a target of reaching two per cent of the total student body. The university is also preparing a double degree cooperation with Ablaikhan University, Kazakhstan, in International Relations. Since 2025, UPNVJ has run an adjunct professor programme, bringing in academics from partner countries like Malaysia and Japan to teach for a full semester. In research, the university is pushing for more publications in reputable international journals indexed by Scopus and Web of Science, while expanding cooperation with institutions in Malaysia, Russia, the United States, the Netherlands, Australia, and other countries.
