UPN Jogja Concludes Research on 'Fire House' in Seyegan
A team of geologists from Universitas Pembangunan Nasional (UPN) Veteran Jogja has revealed the results of their research into the ‘fire house’ phenomenon in Seyegan, Sleman. Their conclusion is that they found no connection between the gas discovered in the Nepen River and the fire at Mutfiana’s house.
‘We are officially closing the research. So, once again, there is no relationship between the gas in the Nepen River and the house that caught fire,’ said Prof. Dr. Ir. RM. Basuki Rahmad, Dean of the Faculty of Mineral Technology and Energy at UPN Veteran Jogja, when met by reporters at the Sleman Regency Government offices on Monday (15/6/2026).
This conclusion was drawn from a series of research results conducted by the UPN geology team. The first step involved surface geological observations, which provided an initial clue in the form of dark claystone suspected to be a source of swamp gas.
‘Then, next to that outcrop, we did find gas bubbles. However, at that time, we were still associating it by analogy with swamp gas,’ he said.
Basuki explained that, based on surface geological data, the position of the gas bubbles was approximately 250 metres from the house that caught fire. ‘But it turned out that when we tested the gas with fire, it would not ignite. So, the bubbles were indeed strong,’ he continued.
Other data also indicated the presence of several faults, which were subsequently validated using geoelectric and geomagnetic methods. The results of both observations found a fault directly beneath Fia’s house.
‘So, we narrowed it down and concluded that we found no connection between the gas that burned and the gas bubbles we discovered in the Nepen River,’ he concluded.
