Upi gears up for Asian chess meet

JAKARTA (JP): International Master Upi Darmayana Tamin will be the only Indonesian to contest the Asian Women's Chess Championships next week in Tamil Nadu, India.

The Indonesian Chess Association has informally named the country's female number-one chess player as its representative for the biennial tournament.

Upi, who recently inspired Indonesia's commendable play in the Chess Olympics in Armenia, is expected to become a grandmaster while playing the 13 matches on her Indian tour.

"I'm very tired after the Chess Olympics, but I'm ready to fight it out in the Asian meet," Upi was quoted by Antara as saying yesterday.

Upi led an Indonesian quartet to finish 10th from 78 teams in the Chess Olympics. Indonesia only managed 24th place in the chess Olympics in Moscow two years ago. (amd)
