UPI Assists Cibiru Wetan Residents in Accessing Clean Water
Twenty heads of households in RW 10, Cibiru Wetan Village, Bandung Regency, have gained access to proper clean water following the implementation of an automated filtration system in early August 2026. This technology addresses the issues faced by residents regarding pump and dug well water, which previously appeared yellowish and had a metallic iron odour.
The system is a grant from the Community Service (PkM) team of the Computer Engineering Study Programme at Universitas Pendidikan Ascendancy (UPI) through the programme titled “Implementation of Water Filtering System Technology for Cibiru Wetan Village in the Framework of Improving SDG Indicators for Clean Water and Sanitation Access”.
The programme is led by Anugrah Adiwilaga, with members Munawir, Muhammad Taufik Dwi Putra, Deden Pradeka, Devi Aprianti Rimadhani Agustini, and Zahra Khaerunnisa. Field implementation also involved students Pascalis Alvin, Bagas Yogta, Dimastio Setiawan, Ikhwan Rizki, and Lumban Tobing Jonathan. In addition to installing the filtration technology, the team also provided training to residents on the operation and maintenance of the device.
The filtration system utilises several stages. Water first passes through an FRP tank containing zeolite, silica sand, manganese greensand, and activated carbon, followed by ultrafiltration membrane filtration and sterilisation using ultraviolet light and hydrogen peroxide injection, controlled by a micro-controller unit.
The implementation of this technology is not only aimed at producing higher quality water but also at building the community’s capacity to manage the facility independently. Residents were involved from the installation stage through to receiving an understanding of device maintenance.
The programme began with a socialisation session at the Cibiru Wetan Village Hall on Thursday (6/8/2026). The physical installation, involving residents, took place from Friday to Saturday (7-8/8/2026), allowing the system to be utilised immediately.
The Head of RW 10, Cibiru Wetan Village, Adi M. Lukman, expressed his appreciation for the technological grant. He stated that residents would form a special committee to ensure the clean water facility can be maintained and operated sustainably.
“We are very grateful for this grant; moving forward, we will establish a special management structure tasked with maintaining and managing the operations of this clean water facility,” he said.
The PkM programme is also directed towards supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 6 regarding clean water and sanitation, Goal 3 regarding health, and Goal 9 regarding innovation and infrastructure.
The UPI Computer Engineering PkM team has scheduled an evaluation of water quality effectiveness and the level of resident understanding regarding device maintenance for Wednesday (2/9/2026). A comprehensive monitoring process to identify technical and non-technical obstacles will also be conducted on Friday (4/9/2026).
This evaluation is a crucial stage to ensure that the donated technology does not end at installation, but can continue to function and be managed by the community to meet clean water needs.
