The Institution for Policy Research and Advocacy (Elsam) would
like to express its deep concern over the way the government
handled the July 27 riots. The various measures that have been
taken, including the "shoot-on-sight" order, making arbitrary
arrests, re-activation of the law on subversion etc., can
endanger the pillars of the nation which bases its authority on
law and respect of human rights.

Based on these facts, Elsam suggests that the government
respect the principles of law by withdrawing the re-application
of the subversion law, and handle the case according to the
provisions of the Criminal Code. Also, we would like to appeal to
the public to exercise self-restraint and avoid taking the law in
their own hands, and make a positive and constructive effort to
settle cases using the principles of democracy.
