Update on North Bali Airport Development Plan

The government is pushing for the immediate realisation of the North Bali Airport project to support equitable development on the Island of the Gods. This follows a meeting between PT Pembangunan Bali Mandiri (Pembari) President Commissioner Baringin Panggabean and President Prabowo Subianto in Hambalang, West Java, on Tuesday (14/7/2026). The meeting, also attended by Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, discussed the plan for the new airport.

President Prabowo reportedly encouraged the project’s swift realisation. The government considers a second international airport in Bali increasingly urgent due to rising tourist visits and the limited capacity of I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport. The North Bali Airport plan is included in the 2025-2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) through Presidential Regulation (Perpres) Number 12 of 2025.

During the meeting, the President inquired about the airport’s readiness to serve wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 777 and Airbus A380. Baringin explained that the airport, to be built in the Kubutambahan area of Buleleng, was designed from the outset to accommodate such large aircraft. He noted that the design refers to a feasibility study approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation at the Ministry of Transportation.

Baringin confirmed that the North Bali Airport project will not burden the State Budget (APBN) or the Regional Budget (APBD). He stated that the project in Buleleng is funded entirely through private investment. The new airport is expected to distribute economic activity so that it is no longer concentrated solely in South Bali, while also creating jobs and boosting the tourism and service sectors in the northern, western, and eastern parts of the island.
