Unused toilets mark ineptitude
KENDARI, Southeast Sulawesi: Many public toilets at schools and government offices in villages across the provice have never been used due to poor planning and water shortages, an official said here on Friday.
Head of the Provincial Development Planning Board, Harli Tombili, said most of the unused toilets, particularly those built at the state and Islamic-based elementary schools and also government offices, have become monuments to the construction quality of the public facilities.
The findings, he said, are based on the survey conducted recently by related government offices and a number of local NGOs, such as the Village Potential Foundation, CARE, and the Indonesian Village Foundation (Yadi).
The administration, he said, had spent a large amount of funds to build the toilets.
But the parties that proposed the projects "did not think about the supporting infrastructure for the toilets, such as the amount of water available", Tombili was quoted by Antara as saying.
