Untirta Introduces Micro-Nanobubble Technology to Boost Shrimp Pond Productivity
Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University (Untirta) has introduced Micro-Nanobubbles Generator (MNBG) technology to improve water quality in vannamei shrimp cultivation in Domas Village, Pontang District, Serang Regency. The results of applying this technology showed that dissolved oxygen (DO) levels in the ponds increased from 3.8 milligrams per litre to 5.1 milligrams per litre.
Professor Teguh Kurniawan, head of the programme implementation team, explained that the MNBG technology produces micro- and nano-sized air bubbles that can persist in water much longer than conventional aeration systems. This condition allows for a more even distribution of oxygen, thereby supporting water quality and shrimp growth. βThe application results showed that dissolved oxygen (DO) values increased from 3.8 mg/L to 5.1 mg/L, which is expected to support improved water quality and the productivity of vannamei shrimp cultivation,β Teguh stated in a written release on Friday (25/7/2026).
The technology was introduced through the 2026 Community Partnership Empowerment Grant programme from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, in collaboration with the Domas Wanayasa Pond Farmers Group (Gapoktam). In addition to introducing the aeration technology, the Untirta team provided training on vannamei shrimp cultivation, assembly of the MNBG device, and harvest marketing strategies.
Team member Dr Dodi Hermawan noted that vannamei shrimp farming has grown rapidly after the production of black tiger shrimp declined due to White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) outbreaks. He said vannamei shrimp is preferred because of its faster growth rate, high survival rate, and the availability of Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) and Specific Pathogen Resistant (SPR) fry.
Meanwhile, Dr Haroki Madani added that micro- and nano-sized air bubbles can increase the efficiency of oxygen transfer into the water. Besides maintaining stable water quality, the technology is also expected to support shrimp growth while reducing the risk of disease.
One of the training participants, Mushowir, assessed that the technology introduced by Untirta provided new knowledge that can be applied in daily farming activities. The Untirta team hopes that the MNBG technology will continue to be adopted by farmers in Domas Village to increase pond productivity and strengthen the sustainability of vannamei shrimp farming businesses.
