Unsafe bridge at Cunca Wulang Waterfall in NTT blamed for deaths of two Austrian tourists

Police have begun investigating the unsafe facilities at Cunca Wulang Waterfall tourist site in West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), following a fatal incident that killed two Austrian tourists. The site has been temporarily closed and cordoned off for investigation.

West Manggarai Police Chief AKBP Christian Kadang stated the suspension bridge at the site was no longer fit for use, with severe deterioration and poor maintenance.

“Most of the walkway planks are loose, lifted, or detached from their frames. Safety railings on both sides are damaged or missing up to 90 percent,” Christian said on Tuesday (26 May).

The victims were Austrian tourists Jurgen, 54, and Astrid, 56, who reportedly fell from the suspension bridge while visiting the natural attraction. The tragedy has drawn attention to safety standards at the Labuan Bajo priority tourism zone.

Police have conducted a crime scene investigation and interviewed at least four witnesses, including on-site staff, local guides, and those who first discovered the incident. Investigators have also seized documents related to the management of the tourist area.

Christian noted multiple safety issues at the site, including the absence of official tour guides and inadequate oversight of tourist facilities. Police highlighted the unsafe infrastructure despite continued tourist visits.

“The Manggarai Barat Police are committed to thoroughly investigating the deaths of the two Austrian tourists,” Christian stressed.

The case is being further examined by summoning relevant parties, including agencies responsible for managing and overseeing natural tourist destinations in West Manggarai Regency.

Meanwhile, West Manggarai Deputy Regent Yulianus Weng said his office would conduct a comprehensive review of all land-based tourist sites managed by the local government, including their infrastructure.
