UNRWA Appeals for Global Support Amid Funding Crisis

Cairo (ANTARA) - The Director of UNRWA Affairs in the occupied West Bank territory and acting Head of the UNRWA Representative Office in Cairo, Roland Friedrich, said on Monday that Palestinian refugees in the agency’s five areas of operation continue to face enormous humanitarian, social and economic challenges.

Meanwhile, the resources available to meet those needs are dwindling.

Friedrich stressed that sustained international support is vital for the continuity of basic services and to help maintain regional stability.

He highlighted the unprecedented and ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, alongside the worsening situation in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

According to him, UNRWA continues to deliver humanitarian and development services amid restrictions, including the ban on UNRWA operations in East Jerusalem.

Friedrich revealed that UNRWA faces a cash shortfall of more than US$100 million (around Rp1.7 trillion) in 2026.

He warned that this funding gap threatens the continuity of essential services for millions of Palestinian refugees and endangers UNRWA’s operations across the five areas.
