Professor of Politics and Security at Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad), Muradi, has expressed appreciation for the work of the Indonesian National Armed Forces’ Military Police Centre (Puspom TNI) in detaining four TNI personnel suspected of carrying out the acid attack on KontraS activist Andrie Yunus. He hopes that the subsequent legal process will be accessible to the public.

“Besides being appreciated, the Puspom TNI colleagues must dig deeper to identify the intellectual actors,” said Muradi via message on Thursday (19/3).

According to him, the acid attack case on Andrie Yunus is a difficult matter given the current situation. Therefore, he encourages transparency in handling the case openly, especially when the perpetrators are tried.

Andrie Yunus was doused with acid in the Salemba area, Central Jakarta, after recording a podcast on militarisation and revisions to the TNI Law, on Thursday night (12/3).

Andrie Yunus was rushed to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) with a diagnosis of burns covering about 20 percent of his body.

Based on admissions from the TNI Military Police Centre (Puspom TNI), four TNI members suspected of involvement have been detained. They are from the Navy (AL) and Air Force (AU). The motive of the perpetrators is still under investigation.

“We convey that all four suspected perpetrators are members of the BAIS TNI Military Police Unit (Denma), not from any specific unit but from the BAIS TNI Denma,” said TNI Deputy Chief of Military Police Major General Yusri Nuryanto at TNI Headquarters, Jakarta, on Wednesday (18/3).

The four TNI personnel suspected of involvement in the acid attack are Captain NDB, Lieutenant SL, Lieutenant BHW, and Sergeant ES.

The Chairman of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI), Muhamad Isnur, highlighted discrepancies in the data on the suspected perpetrators of the acid attack on KontraS activist Andrie Yunus as revealed by the police and the TNI.

YLBHI General Chairman Muhamad Isnur emphasised that the suspected perpetrators of the acid attack on KontraS activist Andrie Yunus should be tried in a general court.

He explained that in the context of geopolitics and national stability, clarity of information and firmness of the apparatus are key factors.

The TNI assures that the handling of the case is being carried out professionally and transparently.

The Ministry of Human Rights stated that the acid attack case on KontraS activist Andrie Yunus has strategic dimensions, attracting widespread public attention as well as international scrutiny.
