Unpad Forms Investigation Team into Alleged Professor Harassing Exchange Student
The rectorate of Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad) has formed an investigation team to thoroughly examine allegations of harassment or verbal sexual violence allegedly committed by one of its professors against an exchange student at the campus.
The rectorate stated that the team was established to ensure the investigation proceeds objectively and comprehensively. The team involves Unpad’s Sexual Violence Prevention and Handling Task Force (Satgas PPKS) as well as representatives from the relevant faculty senate.
“If during the investigation process it is proven that there is a violation in the form of sexual violence, Universitas Padjadjaran will impose sanctions in accordance with applicable regulations and legislation,” said Unpad Rector Prof Arief Sjamsulaksan Kartasasmita in a press release received by journalists on Thursday (16/4).
He noted that the case is being handled carefully, but Unpad remains committed to siding with the victim.
“Unpad will always pay close attention to proof procedures meticulously through existing mechanisms to avoid erroneous decisions, although Unpad’s point of support is towards the victim,” he said.
Arief stated that Unpad does not tolerate any form of violence, including sexual violence, in any form within the campus environment.
“Unpad will consistently carry out proof and enforcement processes for violence in accordance with legislation, and prioritise the interests and safety of the affected party. This applies to all Unpad community members, including lecturers, students, and educational staff,” he revealed.
In addition, regarding the ongoing investigation process, Unpad has also deactivated the professor in question.
Previously, a professor at Unpad went viral for allegedly committing sexual harassment via a messaging app against one of his female students.
From screenshots of the conversation that went viral on social media, the alleged perpetrator is believed to be Professor IY from Unpad’s Faculty of Nursing (FKep). The victim is suspected to be an exchange student at the red-plate campus.
In response, the Unpad Student Executive Board (BEM Kema) and the FKep Unpad BEM Kema issued statements on their Instagram social media pages.
“Currently, BEM Kema Unpad and BEM Kema FKep Unpad have been and will continue to coordinate with Unpad’s Satgas PPKS, the Dean of the Faculty of Nursing at Universitas Padjadjaran, and the Unpad Rectorate,” read their joint statement, quoted on Thursday (16/4).
“In response to the report, we convey our deep concern as well as empathy and solidarity to the affected victim. We affirm that no form of sexual violence can be justified under any circumstances, and such actions have no place in the campus environment,” they added.
In the statement, the two BEMs affirmed their support for the victim and full backing for all efforts in protection, accompaniment, and recovery.
