Unpad develops SMARTAMBAK platform to reduce the risk of failed shrimp harvests
Bandung (ANTARA) — The Digital Business Study Centre at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Padjadjaran, together with UNSW Business School in Australia, has developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-based platform called SMARTAMBAK to reduce the risk of failed shrimp harvests in Indonesia.
According to information from Unpad, SMARTAMBAK is designed to detect early signs of shrimp disease and monitor water-quality and pond-ecosystem parameters in real time, helping farmers anticipate production losses more accurately.
“Developing advanced technology is important so that farmers can identify the condition of the shrimp and the pond environment,” said Alexander M A Khan, a professor at Unpad’s Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science, in a statement in Bandung on Thursday.
Hamzah Ritchi, a professor at Unpad’s Faculty of Economics and Business, said SMARTAMBAK had been designed to be practical and straightforward for farmers to use in the field, without complex technical hurdles, supporting the effective day-to-day management of aquaculture.
Alongside increasing harvest productivity, the transfer of technology is being combined with environmentally friendly pond management to address water pollution and damage to coastal ecosystems.
This measured approach to aquaculture management also supports the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production.
SMARTAMBAK project manager Rora Puspita Sari added that the application had been developed using an inclusive approach so it could reach aquaculture areas in remote parts of Indonesia.
Rora said cross-sector collaboration among Indonesian and Australian researchers, government and businesses was expected to accelerate the development of university research into practical solutions that ensure the sustainability of the country’s aquaculture sector.
The applied digital technology innovation, supported by KONEKSI (Knowledge Partnership Platform Australia-Indonesia), was comprehensively evaluated at the “From Research to Innovation: Meet SMARTAMBAK” forum at the Kimaya Braga Hotel in Bandung on 20 October 2026.
Mohamad Rahmat Mulianda, Director of Marine Affairs and Fisheries at the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas), attended and led discussions with representatives of the Australian Embassy, academics, government and the aquaculture industry.
