Unocal wells find gas and condensate in RI
SINGAPORE (Opecna): Unocal Indonesia, a subsidiary of the
Unocal Corporation, said two exploration wells drilled in the
Mahakam delta area, offshore East Kalimantan, tested significant
quantities of natural gas and condensate.
According to a company press release, there were also
significant quantities of gas and condensates in two other
producing fields in East Kalimantan.
The re-drill of an existing well in the Sepinggan field found
oil in a new fault block, extending the field to the east. a
step-out well also extended the Serang field by more than two
kilometers to the north from existing production facilities.
"The Mahakam delta and other areas offshore East Kalimantan
are a strategic trend in our exploration and development
program," said John F. Imle Jr, Unocal president.
"Our success is due not only to our long experience with the
geology, but also to improved 3-d seismic techniques that give us
a clearer picture of the subsurface and reduce our exploration
risk," he added.
Unocal's successful exploration and development program in
Indonesia last year raised the company's gross production to the
highest level since 1981.
