Unocal provides scholarships

JAKARTA (JP): American energy company Unocal Corporation is to provide up to US$1 million in scholarships for Southeast Asian students to study petroleum and related disciplines at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM).

The vice president and general manager of Unocal Indonesia, Olin D. Whitescarver, told The Jakarta Post yesterday that the scholarship program would be given to help Southeast Asian students who could no longer afford to study overseas following the dollar's sharp appreciation against regional currencies.

The scholarships will be available for any Indonesian students who succeed in enrolling at CSM, he said.

Unocal has also provided a fund of $1.5 million to help finance the studies of 500 Southeast Asian students enrolled in U.S. colleges and universities and establish job retraining programs for newly unemployed Thai workers.

CSW is the only institution in the U.S. that offers doctoral degrees in geology, geophysics, petroleum engineering, and mining engineering. (jsk)
