Unocal discovers oil, gas

JAKARTA (JP): Unocal Indonesia Ltd., an affiliate of the Los- Angeles-based Unocal Corp., has discovered hydrocarbon reserves offshore East Kalimantan with a daily production capacity of 1,263 barrels of oil and 7.4 million cubic feet of natural gas.

S. Zuhdi Pane, head of the Board for the Coordination of Foreign Contractors for the state oil company Pertamina said in a statement yesterday that Unocal, which operates a 10,419-square- kilometer concession area north of East Kalimantan under a production-sharing contract agreement with Pertamina, discovered the oil and gas reserves through its Berukang-1st2 well at a depth of up to 13,718 feet.

Unocal has temporarily abandoned the well and is doing another intensive survey to identify the overall potential of the area, he said. (fhp)
