Unmarried Couple Who Abandoned Baby on Sancaka Train Toilet Named Suspects
The case of a baby boy found in the toilet of the Sancaka 84B train on the Yogyakarta-Surabaya route has finally seen a breakthrough. The perpetrators who abandoned the baby turned out to be an unmarried couple who have now been named suspects.
The baby was discovered on Saturday (4/7/2026) at 07.20 WIB, whilst the Sancaka train was travelling towards Surabaya.
“Officers on board the train found a baby in the toilet of executive carriage 3. The discovery was then reported to the Service Control Centre, which immediately coordinated with Solo Balapan Station,” said Feni Novida Saragih, Public Relations Manager of KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta, in a written statement on Saturday (4/7).
The baby was handed over to the Solo Balapan Station Health Post at 07.30 WIB. Around three minutes later, the train resumed its journey.
“Subsequently, at the Solo Balapan Health Post, KAI officers carried out observations with a doctor and midwife from KAI Solo’s Mediska Clinic. The baby’s general condition was declared to be good. The KAI team then met the baby’s basic needs to ensure his condition remained stable and well maintained,” she explained.
Condition of the baby when found
Initially, officers found no identity documents with the baby. There was only baby equipment and a carton of milk. The infant was wrapped in a blanket and provided with several items of clothing.
“I don’t know the details myself, because that was how it was from the start, from that journey. So when the police received him, he was already wrapped, with clothes prepared. Who prepared them, I don’t know,” said the Head of Banjarsari Police, Commissioner Harno, on Sunday (5/7).
He said the baby was in good and healthy condition when taken to Bhayangkara Hospital in Solo. There were no health problems with the infant. The process of tracking down those who abandoned the baby was carried out in coordination with PT KAI Daop VI Yogyakarta.
“Personnel from the Criminal Investigation Unit of Solo Police Resort, together with the Criminal Investigation Unit of Banjarsari Police, are still conducting a series of investigations, ranging from processing the crime scene, examining witnesses, collecting evidence, tracing CCTV footage, through to coordinating with PT KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta to identify the perpetrators,” said Harno.
From the results of the investigation, police eventually found the trail of those who abandoned the baby. They were arrested on Thursday (9/7).
Unmarried couple named suspects
The two perpetrators arrested were identified as HDP (31), a resident of Semarang, and a woman with the initials NIZ (25), a resident of Tegal. The two were revealed to be in an extramarital relationship.
“The two suspects were dating and engaged in relations as husband and wife, after which NIZ fell pregnant and carried the child to full term. On 1 July 2026, NIZ gave birth to the child at home on her own,” said Deputy Chief of Solo Police, Commissioner Sigit, at a press conference at Solo Police Headquarters on Friday (10/7).
After giving birth, NIZ met HDP, who works in Yogyakarta, on Thursday (2/7). The two stayed overnight at a hotel where HDP works and began planning to abandon the unfortunate baby.
“On 4 July at around 04.30 WIB, the two headed to Lempuyangan Station, then boarded a train towards Solo and alighted at Klaten Station. They then boarded a KRL commuter train back to Yogyakarta,” said Sigit.
The two suspects then crossed through the Sancaka train carriages to reach the KRL.
“Whilst walking to the KRL through the Sancaka executive carriage, the suspects had the idea of leaving the baby inside the executive carriage,” said Sigit.
Head of the Women’s and Children’s Protection Unit at Solo Police, Commissioner Ratna Karlinasari, added that after a series of investigations, the two suspects were arrested at different locations.
“The man was secured on Wednesday night (8/7) in Yogyakarta. The woman on Thursday (9/7) in Tegal,” said Ratna.
A number of pieces of evidence were seized in the case, including the suspects’ clothing, a suitcase, and baby equipment. As a result of their actions, the couple faces Article 429 in conjunction with Article 430 and Article 20 of the Criminal Code concerning child neglect, with a maximum prison sentence of seven years.
