UNM Students Partner with KAI to Develop Disability-Friendly Transport Innovation

Universitas Nusa Mandiri (UNM), as a Digital Business Campus, continues to encourage student innovations that provide solutions to societal problems. A team from the Digital Business study programme, working on a Student Creativity Programme for Constructive Idea Videos (PKM-VGK) called DISABI (Disability Smart Accessibility), recently conducted administrative coordination and licensing consultations with PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Operational Area (DAOP) 1 Jakarta on 31 May 2026. This coordination is a preliminary stage before field observation and video production at Cikini Station, chosen as the study location for developing a more inclusive public transport concept for persons with disabilities. The meeting aimed to gather information on licensing mechanisms, filming regulations within the station area, suitable observation locations, and procedures to prioritise the safety, security, and comfort of public transport users. The DISABI team is promoting the concept of Disability Smart Accessibility, an idea that offers a public transport system development through the integration of digital technology and accessibility management to create more friendly services for persons with disabilities. Keysha Meyuna, the team’s Public Relations officer, explained that communication with external partners is crucial to ensure all programme stages comply with regulations. She stated that the coordination with PT KAI DAOP 1 Jakarta was a very important first step, allowing the team to obtain information on licensing procedures and understand operational rules within the station environment so that the observation and video production process can proceed in an orderly, safe, and compliant manner. She also expressed appreciation for KAI’s openness in providing guidance during the consultation. The team’s supervising lecturer, Johan Hendri Prasetyo, assessed that the coordination process with industry partners is an essential part of the learning experience for students in developing innovation. He noted that innovation arises not only from creative ideas but also from the ability to build collaboration with various stakeholders, through which students learn professional ethics, administrative governance, organisational communication, and the importance of regulatory compliance. He added that these competencies will equip them when entering the professional world or developing future innovations. Following the guidance on licensing mechanisms, the team will proceed to the field observation and video production stages according to the planned schedule, with the entire process adhering to the procedures and regulations applicable within PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero). The activity also serves as tangible proof of Universitas Nusa Mandiri’s commitment as a Digital Business Campus to encourage students to present technology-based innovations that impact society. By strengthening a research culture, industry collaboration, and applicable digital solutions, UNM continues to nurture a creative and adaptive young generation capable of addressing sustainable development challenges, driven by the spirit of ‘Turning Dreams into Achievements’ to contribute to Indonesia’s digital transformation.
