UNM Lecturers Develop AI Chatbot to Improve MSMEs’ Legal Literacy
JAKARTA — A team of lecturers from the Information Systems Study Programme at Universitas Nusa Mandiri (UNM) has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing (NLP)-based chatbot to improve the legal literacy of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). The innovation, titled “Developing an NLP-Powered Chatbot Application for MSME Legal Literacy”, is designed to make information on permits and business regulations easier for business owners to access.
As a digital business campus, UNM continues to promote applied research that combines AI with the practical needs of the public. Developed using Python and Flask, the application recorded a 100 per cent success rate in functional testing and a usability score of 71.98.
Andi Saryoko, head of UNM’s Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM), praised the lecturers’ research for its potential impact.
“This innovation demonstrates UNM’s commitment to producing research that is not only academically valuable but also offers practical solutions for the public. We will continue to support the development of digital research so that it can be applied more widely in the MSME sector,” he said in a statement received on Friday (30 October).
Research team member Syarif Hidayatulloh said the chatbot was developed to address small businesses’ limited understanding of legal matters.
“MSMEs often face difficulties with permits and legal issues because their access to information is limited,” he said.
Using NLP, the application provides interactive introductory guidance and also offers a live-chat feature with legal experts for users who need more detailed information, he explained.
“We hope this innovation will continue to be developed with a broader knowledge base to support legal compliance among Indonesian MSMEs. This is part of UNM’s ongoing contribution to strengthening the national digital economy ecosystem,” he said.
