UNM Data Science Students to Present Border Language Research at ICITRI 2026
Three students from the Data Science undergraduate programme at Universitas Nusa Mandiri (UNM) will present their project results at an international academic forum, The 2026 International Conference on Information Technology Research and Innovation (ICITRI), to be held on Thursday, 10 September 2026 at Universitas Nusa Mandiri, Jl Margonda Raya No 545, Pondok Cina, Beji, Depok.
The three students are Kasa Inti Josia Tambunan, Nouval Ghoonimu Tsawab, and Siti Zainab, all sixth-semester students of the UNM Data Science programme. Their participation provides an opportunity to broaden their academic experience while presenting technology- and data-based ideas and solutions before an international academic community.
One of the works to be presented by Kasa Inti Josia Tambunan is titled A Hybrid Retrieval Chatbot with Deterministic Intent Routing for Indonesian Border Languages. The work is part of a big data research project on border languages led by Dr Foni Agus Setiawan from the Knowledge and Data Engineering Research Group at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).
Head of the UNM Data Science programme, Tati Mardiana, said that student involvement in international scientific forums is an important experience for developing competence and boosting self-confidence.
“The opportunity to present work at an international forum provides a highly valuable academic experience. Students learn to convey ideas systematically, answer questions, receive feedback, and account for their project results before the academic community,” Tati said in a written statement on Monday (17/8/2026).
According to her, the experience not only strengthens academic ability but also broadens students’ insight into technological developments and the needs of society and industry at a global level.
“Data Science students cannot merely master technology and data. They must also possess communication skills, collaboration, critical thinking, problem solving, and the ability to adapt to an increasingly global work environment,” Tati said.
Tati added that the experience of developing a project and bringing it to an international forum is part of a learning process that encourages students to dare to produce work and test ideas academically.
“When students dare to bring their work to an international forum, they learn to account for their ideas while gaining new perspectives from other researchers and academics. This is an important foundation for building their competitiveness after graduation,” she said.
As a Digital Business Campus, she said, UNM continues to encourage students to develop technological competencies relevant to industry needs and digital developments. The Data Science programme is one part of that ecosystem, equipping students with data processing, analysis, and technology utilisation skills to produce data-based solutions.
“The participation of Data Science students in ICITRI 2026 also shows that learning in higher education can be extended through research experience and academic forums. Students do not only learn in the classroom, but also gain the opportunity to develop projects, collaborate, and introduce their work to the scientific community,” Tati said.
