The government has officially implemented a work-from-home (WFH) policy for civil servants (ASN) for one day per week, specifically every Friday starting 1 April 2026. Differing from the centre, the East Java Provincial Government has chosen WFH every Wednesday.

East Java Deputy Governor Emil Elestianto Dardak stated that the difference in schedule is based on an energy efficiency strategy, particularly to reduce fuel oil (BBM) consumption from private vehicles.

“We base this on the desire and strategic directive to reduce private vehicle BBM consumption. Therefore, WFH is applied on Wednesdays,” said Emil at the Negara Grahadi Building, as reported by detikJatim on Wednesday (1/4/2026).

Emil explained that the East Java Provincial Government’s choice of Wednesday is not without reason. The decision is based on community mobility patterns where Fridays have the potential for increased travel activity.

“On Fridays, there is a tendency to increase the desire to travel. Meanwhile, many countries’ strategies currently are to reduce BBM consumption amid global conflicts impacting energy,” he clarified.

Emil emphasised that the East Java Provincial Government remains open to adjustments with the central government. They are still awaiting further directives regarding the policy’s implementation.

“We will see later whether it needs to be aligned or kept as is, awaiting further directives,” he said.
