UNJ Psychology Student Body Claims Identity Misused in 'BEM Bersatu' Political Statement

The Psychology Faculty Student Executive Board (BEM) at the State University of Jakarta (UNJ) has stated it was misrepresented in a press conference held by the ‘BEM Bersatu’ (United BEM) Alliance. The event featured an individual named Ahmad Ghazy, who claimed to represent BEM Psychology UNJ. ‘BEM Psychology UNJ has never given consent to this individual to represent or use the name of BEM Psychology UNJ,’ the organisation said in an official Instagram post on Wednesday. The individual involved is an alumnus of the Psychology Faculty from the 2020 cohort and is not a member of the active 2026 board. The board stated that any actions or views expressed are the sole responsibility of the individual. ‘We deeply regret this ethical violation, and the person concerned has been asked to apologise to BEM Psychology UNJ for the discomfort and impact caused,’ the statement read. As an organisation within the academic field of psychology, BEM Psychology UNJ believes that ethics, respect for consent, and integrity are values that must be upheld and internalised in every action and professional relationship. Several other campuses have also reported being misrepresented at the event, including the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at the National University (FISIP UNAS) and the BEM of the Faculty of Engineering and Informatics at Bina Sarana Informatika University (UBSI). The BEM Bersatu alliance had previously declared its rejection of student movements being co-opted by practical political interests, arguing that student movements must remain the voice of the people rather than a tool for seizing power. The alliance also voiced support for the continuation of the Free Nutritious Meal Programme with improved governance, and urged a thorough investigation of corruption without discrimination.
