University to form culture laboratory

JEMBER, East Java: Jember University will soon set up a laboratory to study the local cultures of the Tengger on Mt. Bromo, the Maduranese, and the Osing in Banyuwangi, Antara reported.

Rector Kabul Santosa said yesterday that experts and researchers at the university are ready for deployment. He did not say when the projects will commence, but explained that he has contacted a number of community leaders and has received a favorable response.

Kabul said there was a need for intensive study of the cultures to help dispel stereotypes. For instance, the Javanese often portray Maduranese as rude or funny people in garish costumes. (swe)
