University students hurt in brawl
The Jakarta Post, Jakarta
As many as 36 university students were injured in a brawl between
around 100 students of the Christian University of Indonesia
(UKI) and YAI Persada Indonesia University on Jl. Diponegoro on
Tuesday.
Bahrul, a pedestrian, was also injured when a stone hit his
head.
Witnesses said the brawl started at about 1:30 p.m. when some
unidentified students threw stones at another group of students
after both sides mocked each other.
The brawl lasted for an hour, prompting the police to close
the street and reroute the traffic to Jl. Proklamasi. The brawl
worsened traffic congestion in the area.
Central Jakarta Police station deployed its officers to
disperse the students and reported that 11 UKI students and 25
YAI students were injured, mostly from head wounds.
The injured were sent to Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital
and Saint Carolus Hospital for treatment.
The students did not only throw stones at one another. They
also took cigarettes, candies and bottled drinking water from
street vendors without paying.
"No one paid for those," Adang, a cigarette vendors, said as
quoted by www.detik.com news portal.
Last October, students from the two universities were also
involved in a brawl that injured 15.
However, after the brawl UKI students held a press briefing
promising that the would end violence between UKI and other
universities. They said they would invite students from nearby
universities to promote peace.
But only two days after the pledge, another brawl broke out,
injuring 10 students. The clash also damaged two cars that were
parked nearby.
