University Student in South Jakarta Claims Harassment by Lecturer, Perpetrator Only Temporarily Suspended

JAKARTA - A female student at a university in South Jakarta, identified as A, claims she was harassed by a lecturer on campus. The victim shared this account on her Instagram social media account. In her post, A questioned the campus authorities’ action of only temporarily suspending the perpetrator from academic positions. She assessed that the existing evidence should be sufficient to establish this case as a criminal act of sexual violence (TPKS). Besides herself, two other female students are said to have also become victims. “The harassment case has been ongoing for a long time since he was still a student. Now that he has graduated, she only spoke up because she was afraid and traumatised back then,” explained Pahala to Kompas.com on Tuesday (7/4/2026). According to Pahala, the form of harassment experienced by the victims was mostly verbal, such as repeated marriage proposals from the perpetrator with initials Y. Additionally, the victims are said to have experienced non-verbal harassment. The victims had previously reported the incident to the campus authorities in 2023. The report was followed up with a temporary dismissal of Y for six months. However, during the evaluation period, Y was still seen to be active in the campus environment, making the victim feel uncomfortable. “The campus stated that the perpetrator was dismissed for six months but still received a salary and was active, like in technical meetings on campus. If there is strong suspicion, it should be stopped,” said Pahala. The plan is, through legal representatives, the victim will issue a summons to the campus authorities demanding the permanent dismissal of the perpetrator. According to Pahala, the removal of the perpetrator’s position as an academic official should be a firm step by the campus to maintain a clean environment free from harassment. “The process is gradual, persuasive first. Previously, the alumni chairman was not respected and was even scolded, so they were forced to issue a summons,” he said. Meanwhile, the university rector, Agus Setyo Budi, in a written statement on the official campus website, stated that the victim’s account is not yet supported by strong evidence. According to Agus, this conclusion is based on the results of the investigation by the Prevention and Handling of Violence in Higher Education Team (PPKPT). “The evidence presented and the witnesses brought forward are not strong enough to indicate suspected sexual violence,” explained Agus, quoted by Kompas.com on Tuesday. On the other hand, the campus has issued a certificate letter numbered K/UBL/REK/000/006/02/26 dated 27 February 2026.
