Police have arrested a university student in Semarang, Central Java, in connection with a motorcycle embezzlement case. The student allegedly misappropriated 40 motorcycles using a rental scam tactic.

The Chief of Ngaliyan Police, Commissioner Aliet Alphard, stated that the incident began when a victim was contacted by the perpetrator on 7 May 2026, requesting assistance in finding motorcycles for rent. Lured by the prospect of rental income, the victim agreed to rent their vehicle to the suspect.

“The victim intended to rent their motorcycle to the suspect because they believed the income would be significant for daily expenses,” Aliet said during a press conference at the Ngaliyan Police Station on Monday (8/6/2026).

A few days later, the victim discovered that the motorcycle had been pawned by the perpetrator and found it difficult to contact the suspect. The matter was subsequently reported to the police.

Aliet revealed that the suspect is an active seventh-semester student. “The suspect, identified as Ibra Maulana (23), is a student at a university in the Semarang area,” said Aliet. He added that the suspect is a resident of Tapak, Tugu District.

Following an investigation, the Head of Criminal Investigation at Ngaliyan Police, Inspector Nur Azam Makhrus, confirmed that the perpetrator was arrested on Thursday (4/6/2026) in a residential area in Kaliwungu, Kendal. “We secured him in the Kendal area, specifically in a housing estate. He has been brought here for further legal processing,” said Azam.

Commissioner Aliet further explained that investigations revealed the perpetrator had embezzled a total of 40 motorcycles. Police have successfully recovered 23 of the vehicles. “The total number of vehicles involved is 40. However, some were reclaimed by the victims or owners before the report was filed. Out of the 25 vehicles reported to us, we have secured 23. Two units are still being sought,” he added.
