University of Indonesia Emphasises Pancasila as a Living Ideology
Pancasila, according to Ahmad Gamal, Vice Rector for Planning, Finance, and Resources and Acting Rector of the University of Indonesia (UI), serves as both a guiding star and a moral anchor for the nation. The noble values of Pancasila are not only relevant for maintaining Indonesia’s integrity but also provide an answer for the creation of lasting world peace.
Gamal expressed this during his role as the ceremony leader for the Pancasila Day commemoration at the UI Depok Rectorate Building on Tuesday, 2 June 2026. Under the theme “Pancasila as the Unifier of the Nation, the Foundation of World Peace”, this year’s commemoration reaffirmed that Pancasila acts not only as a national adhesive but also as the foundation of Indonesian diplomacy in achieving global peace.
Gamal continued the speech previously delivered by the Head of the Agency for the Development of Pancasila Ideology (BPIP), Yudi Wahyudi. He noted that Indonesia holds a constitutional responsibility to participate in establishing world order based on independence, lasting peace, and social justice.
The values of deliberation and consensus (musyawarah and mufakat) contained within Pancasila are essential diplomatic instruments needed by the world today to bridge differences and halt conflicts. Indonesia’s contributions through UN peacekeeping forces, regional conflict mediation, and its consistent advocacy for justice for colonised nations are tangible manifestations of the second principle: “Just and Civilised Humanity”.
Gamal also emphasised the vital message for the entire UI academic community to treat Pancasila as a living ideology, rather than merely a text in history books or an ornament on office walls. In daily practice, Pancasila must function as the basis for every policy formulated and every behaviour displayed, particularly in the implementation of the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi (the Three Pillars of Higher Education).
University of Indonesia marked the 2026 Pancasila Day commemoration as a moment of reflection for the academic community to ensure the flame of Pancasila’s spirit and inspiration remains vibrant within every member of the campus. Furthermore, UI reaffirmed its position as a leading institution in guarding Pancasila values.
UI is committed not only to producing excellent academics and impactful research but also to shaping a national character that is high in integrity, upholds unity, and plays an active role in maintaining world peace. By strengthening Pancasila as a living ideology, UI positions itself as a university that consistently maintains academic dignity while contributing significantly to addressing the challenges of globalisation and national dynamics.
