Universitas Indonesia and Muhammadiyah Sign MoU for Collaboration, Including Faculty Exchanges
Universitas Indonesia and PP Muhammadiyah signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at the UI Convention Hall, Depok, West Java. The collaboration includes faculty exchanges to improve the quality of education in Indonesia.
“Yes, this collaboration between UI and Muhammadiyah is particularly in the field of education. This is about how the quality of education in Indonesia can be further improved and evenly distributed across all levels. So we cannot advance alone; we must advance together, growing together like that,” said UI Rector Heri Hermansyah to reporters on Monday (13/4/2026).
He stated that what are the strengths of UI will be disseminated to all education in Indonesia, and vice versa. This collaboration is expected to have an impact that provides a multiplier effect. Thus, the capacity of UI, the capacity of Muhammadiyah, and universities in Indonesia will continue to increase.
“Well, the essence is when we collaborate with foreign universities, we are carried along. So then the quality of UI’s education improves in terms of quality, teaching quality, faculty quality, student quality, graduate quality. So then they can be at a stage where they can compete at the global level,” he said.
Heri stated that, in addition to collaborating with foreign entities, UI also looks at various other universities within the country. Then they carry out the same programmes, such as double degrees.
“Well, this can also be our pioneer, double degrees with local universities in Indonesia. For example, 2 years at a Muhammadiyah University then 2 years at Universitas Indonesia. Well, then the learning at Muhammadiyah University and learning at UI mutually recognise each other and then receive a diploma from Muhammadiyah, receive a diploma from Universitas Indonesia. Well, that’s the double degree,” he said.
“Well, from there, from that educational collaboration, there will then be faculty exchanges, Muhammadiyah faculty teaching at UI, UI faculty teaching at Muhammadiyah universities across Indonesia, for example, then the quality of education improves,” he added.
General Chairman of PP Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir said that 2045 marks a century of Indonesia. Looking at that, the projection is to strengthen human resources that are highly competitive, independent, and so on.
“Well, that all cannot be realised if we do not improve our education and health, including building character within it. Well, Muhammadiyah has a wide organisational network, then we have a large membership, and UI has a strategic role as mentioned by the Rector earlier. Therefore, this collaboration is truly a strategic collaboration for the nation’s interests,” said Haedar.
He stated that this collaboration will encourage Indonesian education to compete at the global level.
“And if we continue to tackle education issues, where currently we are still below three ASEAN countries, Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia, in terms of competitiveness. Then not only that, we can build human resources with strong character, deep knowledge, mastering science and technology, and at the same time still having our cultural strength so that we can compete at the global level,” he concluded.
