Unity and integrity

Unity and integrity

From Sinar Pagi

The recent violence involving security personnel, student demonstrators and the general public, and the positive and negative aspects of the recent Special Session of the People's Consultative Assembly could lead to the disintegration of the nation and have caused a great deal of concern to the people.

In view of this condition, I would like to appeal to the government, national and social leaders, students as well as the Indonesian people in general to pay attention to the following:

1. Place national unity and integrity, the interests of the people and the country above the interests of individuals and groups.

2. Respect differences of opinions.

3. Avoid anarchy and unconstitutional acts.

4. Do not suspect each other.

5. Religious organizations must not engage in practical politics.

6. Establish national reconciliation by way of:

a. Not demanding the resignation of the Armed Forces Commander in the wake of the Semanggi tragedy. Also, the Armed Forces leaders should not instruct their subordinates to shoot people on the spot, nor should they use real bullets when facing students and the people.

b. The radical group (group 17) should not be condemned for attempting to topple the legitimate government. Their opinion should be considered as valuable input.

c. Give a chance for the incumbent government to exercise its mandate in accordance with the regulations decreed by the People's Consultative Assembly.
