Unisa Jogja's Statements on Viral Case of Student Allegedly Sneaking into Women's Toilet
Universitas ’Aisyiyah (Unisa) Yogyakarta has addressed the narrative circulating on social media regarding a student who dressed like a woman and was allegedly caught sneaking into a women’s toilet. The narrative emerged from the Instagram account @mkc.unisa, which claimed there was an impression of negligence concerning a male Psychology student who dared to dress as a woman, sneak into a female student’s bathroom, and even stay overnight in a boarding house of the opposite sex. The account also expressed disappointment that instead of taking firm action, a lecturer was found creating content with the student, describing it as a permissive act for digital existence that normalises deviation from nature.
Head of the Public Relations and Protocol Bureau of Unisa Yogyakarta, Sinta Maharani, stated that the case is being followed up by the university’s ethics team. She said the team is carrying out the investigation process in accordance with applicable standard operating procedures. Sinta noted that the matter related to the student is still under investigation to find the truth. Preliminary investigation results have not found any facts indicating the student entered the women’s toilet. Unisa Yogyakarta hopes the public will uphold the principle of presumption of innocence.
Sinta emphasised that Unisa, as an educational institution, does not tolerate any form of ethical violation, whether committed by students or other members of the academic community. The university will make a decision based on the investigation team’s recommendations, which could range from guidance to more severe sanctions, depending on the type of violation committed.
Vice Rector III of Unisa Yogyakarta, Prof Mufdlilah, revealed that a similar case had occurred previously, in which the university imposed a strict sanction by dropping out the student. For the current developing case, the student who dressed improperly is currently receiving guidance from the university. Mufdlilah stated the university will continue to strengthen the student guidance system and evaluate policies to ensure a safe, orderly, and conducive academic environment for all. The university urges all parties to address information wisely, prioritise clarification, and avoid spreading personal identities or bullying those involved. As an educational institution, Unisa Yogyakarta believes that rule enforcement must go hand in hand with respect for human dignity, ethics, and civilised educational principles.
