Unique: The Cover of This Limited-Edition Magazine Can Be Used to Play Tetris
KOMPAS.com - Red Bull Media House, the media division of the well-known beverage company Red Bull, has released a magazine with a unique cover. The cover of the magazine can be used to play the legendary block-stacking game, Tetris.
This Game Pop Bulletin series magazine is the latest project from Red Bull Media House and The Tetris Company, called the GamePop GP-1 Playable Magazine System. This is a magazine cover system that also functions as a mini gaming device.
The magazine itself was designed by renowned engineer and designer Kevin Bates, and was created to celebrate the partnership between Red Bull Media House and The Tetris Company, especially through the global Red Bull Tetris tournament in 2025.
Previously, Kevin Bates was known as the designer of a miniature portable console the size of a card, nicknamed Arduboy.
So, how can the front of the magazine be used to play Tetris?
The device has a screen with a panel containing 180 RGB LED lights. The lights in this panel function to display the Tetris game and visuals.
For the Tetris block control aspect, Red Bull Media House relies on capacitive sensors that will respond to human fingers.
When used for playing, Red Bull Media House claims that this mini Tetris console can last for up to 1-2 hours of gameplay. After the power runs out, the device can be recharged via a USB-C port which is also embedded in the magazine.
Even though it has been released to the public, this magazine with a Tetris-playable front cover is only produced in limited quantities, and this product is also not sold freely.
For readers who want to own a printed version, Red Bull still sells the magazine titled Game Pop: The Culture of Play. This edition discusses the history of the gaming industry and its impact on popular culture, but it does not include the interactive Tetris device, as summarized by KompasTekno from Players.com.
