UNIFIL Observes Extensive Israeli Military Activity in UN Operations Area
United Nations Headquarters, New York (ANTARA) - The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) continues to observe extensive military activity by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) throughout its area of operations, a United Nations (UN) spokesperson said on Friday (12/6). According to the Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, the activity includes large-scale movements of armoured vehicles, extensive engineering and demolition operations, and sustained logistical traffic. During the daily press briefing, Dujarric said intense aerial activity by Israeli forces was also reported on Thursday (11/6), involving fighter jets and various types of unmanned aerial systems. UNIFIL recorded 72 violations of Lebanese airspace by the IDF, while eight airstrikes were launched by the IDF in the UNIFIL area of operations on the same day. “The UN remains deeply concerned about the continued impact of the fighting on healthcare and the public’s access to essential services in Lebanon,” Dujarric said. Citing local authorities, Dujarric said an attack reported on Thursday (11/6) near the Hiram Hospital in Tyre District, South Governorate, Lebanon, injured 10 staff members and damaged the hospital building and several vehicles. This is at least the fifth reported incident affecting the Hiram Hospital since the escalation of the conflict began on 2 March. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that 17 hospitals across Lebanon have sustained damage during the period of conflict escalation, including all three hospitals in Tyre. Dujarric disclosed that 135 health workers and first responders have been killed, while nearly 400 have been injured.
