UNIFIL Detects No Violations of Lebanon Ceasefire
New York (ANTARA) - UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said on Monday that the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) recorded no violations of the ceasefire in Lebanon on 21 June. “Yesterday marked the first day since the resumption of hostilities on 2 March in Lebanon where our peacekeepers did not detect any launches or observe any interceptions,” Dujarric told a press conference, adding that the situation continued into this morning. The UN welcomed the reduction in hostilities between the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) and the Lebanese Hezbollah movement, the spokesperson said, expressing hope the trend would continue. “However, over the past three days, UNIFIL peacekeepers have continued to observe extensive IDF ground activity across the mission’s area of responsibility, including armoured vehicle manoeuvres, as well as engineering and logistical activities,” Dujarric said. UN peacekeepers also detected several violations of Lebanese airspace by Israeli aircraft. Earlier on 19 June, Reuters reported that Israel and Hezbollah had agreed to a ceasefire that came into effect the same day. Subsequently, a Lebanese military field source told RIA Novosti that Israel continued to carry out attacks in the south of the country despite reports of a ceasefire regime. On Sunday, IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir said the ceasefire with Hezbollah was fragile and called on the military to be prepared to resume hostilities.
