UNHCR official visits Myanmar
YANGON (AP): A top official of the UN High Commissioner for
Refugees has arrived in Yangon for talks with Myanmar's military
government, a government statement said on Monday.
Soren Jessen Petersen, assistant high commissioner for the
Geneva-based UNHCR, arrived on Sunday and was expected to stay
for four days depending on how discussions progress, said staff
at UNHCR's office in the Myanmar capital.
Details were not immediately available about the topics to be
discussed.
Over 140,000 Myanmar nationals, mostly from ethnic minorities,
are sheltering in Bangladesh and Thailand, having fled fighting,
forced labor and harsh mass relocation campaigns by the Myanmar
regime in eastern and western border areas.
