Unhas Rector Stresses Importance of Shared Vision for Blue Economy
Makassar (ANTARA) - Hasanuddin University Rector Prof Jamaluddin Jompa has emphasised the importance of a shared vision and mission between government, industry, academics, and the community in building an inclusive and sustainable blue economy ecosystem. Speaking in Makassar on Saturday, Prof Jamaluddin Jompa stated that the development of marine and fisheries science is a collective responsibility. The immense potential of Indonesia’s maritime resources presents strategic opportunities as well as challenges that must be addressed through synergy and collaboration. According to him, strengthening the marine and fisheries sector not only aims to improve the welfare of coastal communities and fishermen, but is also a crucial part of safeguarding national food security. “The outcomes of this Symarfish forum will be conveyed to policymakers. This forum brings together the best thinking from scientists and practitioners contributing to strengthening Indonesia’s marine and fisheries science,” Prof JJ explained. Committee Chair Wilma J. C. Moka, PhD, noted that 120 participants attended the event, with a total of 90 paper abstracts registered. The participants came from various countries, reflecting the growing breadth of international collaboration in supporting maritime sector research and innovation. “We hope this forum will produce tangible impacts on the governance of marine and fisheries resources,” Wilma stated. Symarfish 2026 featured a range of strategic topics, including aquatic biodiversity, aquatic ecology and conservation, oceanography and climate change, marine and fisheries biotechnology, sustainable aquaculture, marine and fisheries geographic information systems, aquatic pollution and ecotoxicology, fisheries product processing, and the socio-economics of marine and fisheries.
