Unhas rector pushes for complete history of Sultan Hasanuddin

Makassar (ANTARA) - Rector of Hasanuddin University Prof Dr Jamaluddin Jompa has encouraged the preparation of a book containing the complete history of South Sulawesi national hero Sultan Hasanuddin.

Rector Prof JJ, in a statement in Makassar on Sunday, expressed hope that the effort would enable the entire Unhas academic community, including lecturers and educational staff, to gain a better understanding of Sultan Hasanuddin’s history.

“As an institution that bears the name Sultan Hasanuddin, Unhas has a responsibility to understand the history of Sultan Hasanuddin’s struggle more fully and deeply,” he said during a pilgrimage to Sultan Hasanuddin’s grave in Sungguminasa, Gowa Regency.

He explained that the figure of Sultan Hasanuddin holds a meaning that is attached to Unhas, as the name of the largest campus in Eastern Indonesia was inspired by the hero’s name.

The values of struggle and exemplary conduct bequeathed by Sultan Hasanuddin, he said, serve as a reminder for the sustainability of Hasanuddin University.

“I ask that we interpret history not only to know those who have preceded us, but also to remember and implement every deed and every action carried out by our predecessors,” said Prof Jompa.

The rector’s idea and encouragement regarding this history is ready to be implemented by the Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences Prof Dr Andi Muhammad Akhmar, who is prepared to facilitate the process of compiling the history book.

Chairman of the 70th Dies Natalis Committee of Unhas Prof Dr A. Mujetahid, who is also the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry at Unhas, explained that the grave pilgrimage is an annual tradition ahead of the Unhas Dies Natalis celebration.

“Although this is an annual activity, Unhas maintains this tradition to always remember the services and dedication of our predecessors, both lecturers and educational staff,” he said.
