Unhas Rector: Patriot Transmigrasi Programme Embodies 'Impactful Campus' Vision

Rector of Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas), Prof Jamaluddin Jompa (JJ), has stated that the university’s involvement in the Patriot Transmigrasi programme is a tangible implementation of the ‘impactful campus’ vision, which positions higher education institutions as strategic partners in development. Speaking in Makassar on Thursday, he said that through cross-disciplinary collaboration, research results, innovation, and academic expertise, the university hopes to translate knowledge into solutions that address community needs whilst advancing transmigration areas. During their assignment, the patriots will collaborate with communities and local governments to map regional potential, identify development challenges, and design and implement programmes relevant to local characteristics and needs. ‘Higher education must not merely be an ivory tower that produces education and research. Knowledge must be present within society, become a solution to real problems, and have an impact on regional development,’ Prof JJ asserted. He further reminded participants that bearing the title of Patriot is no simple matter. A patriot, he said, must possess a sincere love for the country, a willingness to sacrifice, and a readiness to be present and work alongside the community. These values serve as the primary foundation for building trust, respecting local wisdom, and ensuring that every programme genuinely benefits the people. Prof JJ stressed that a patriot’s success is not measured by the number of programmes implemented, but by the trust successfully built with the community. He expressed hope that every participant would uphold the institution’s good name, maintain high integrity, and serve with complete sincerity. ‘I hope that when the assignment period ends, your departure will be felt as a loss, because you have been accepted, trusted, and loved by the community you serve,’ he remarked during the send-off for the 2026 Patriot Expedition Team in Makassar.
