Unhas Rector: Impact Rankings Achievement Proves University's Maritime Campus Identity
Makassar (ANTARA) - Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas) Rector Prof Jamaluddin Jompa stated that achieving first place nationally and 31st globally in the Life Below Water (SDG 14) category of the Times Higher Education (THE) Sustainibility Impact Rankings 2026 proves Unhas is a maritime campus contributing to the sustainable management and utilisation of marine resources.
He explained that as a higher education institution located in eastern Indonesia with close proximity to various coastal and marine ecosystems, Unhas consistently develops research on marine biodiversity, coastal conservation, sustainable fisheries, ecosystem rehabilitation, and maritime community empowerment.
The SDG 14 category focuses on the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources, oceans, and coastal ecosystems. In the THE Sustainable Impact Rankings, this indicator assesses universities’ contributions through institutional policies, scientific publications, research activities, collaborations, and tangible impacts in supporting marine ecosystem sustainability.
Key areas of assessment include protecting and restoring marine and coastal ecosystems through the conservation and rehabilitation of coastal areas, mangroves, seagrass beds, and coral reefs; reducing ocean acidification by strengthening research and scientific collaboration related to climate change and ocean health; and conserving coastal and marine areas by protecting ecologically valuable zones.
