Unhas Rector: AI Requires Balance Between Technology and Ethical Awareness
Makassar (ANTARA) - Rector of Universitas Hasanuddin Prof Jamaluddin Jompa (JJ) has emphasised the need for a balance between technology and ethical awareness in the utilisation and application of artificial intelligence (AI). Prof JJ in Makassar on Monday said that amid the current development of AI, the boundary between facts and manipulation is becoming increasingly thin, thus raising fundamental questions about ethics and legal protection. In practice, AI enables the automation of content production, personalisation of messages, and the creation of synthetic realities such as deepfakes. This ease opens up significant opportunities for the media and communications industries, but at the same time presents new risks, from disinformation to privacy violations. On the other hand, the legal framework is demanded to be adaptive in order to keep pace with the continuously developing speed of innovation. In light of this situation, the Unhas Rector explained that universities have a strategic role as spaces for knowledge production as well as guardians of values. Unhas positions digital literacy as an important part of equipping students to face technological disruptions. “Students as the younger generation must be able to understand and utilise this technology wisely for the future,” he explained at the talkshow titled “AI for the Nation’s Children” organised by Unhas TV in collaboration with TV Tempo, which took place at the Main Studio of Unhas TV in Makassar.
