The Rectorate of Hasanuddin University (Unhas) in Makassar, South Sulawesi, has denied information stating that 28 students were sanctioned or suspended after criticising the management of the Nutrition Service Fulfilment Unit (SPPG), or kitchen, for the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) programme within the campus.

Head of Unhas Public Relations, Ishaq Rahman, stressed that no decision on suspension was taken by either the faculty or the rectorate regarding the criticism voiced by the students.

“The information is untrue. There has been no suspension decision whatsoever taken by the faculty or the rectorate of Unhas related to the criticism of the MBG,” Ishaq said in a statement on Saturday (13/6).

According to Ishaq, Unhas continues to uphold academic freedom and the freedom to express opinions as part of campus life. The university also provides a healthy and ethical space for dialogue for the entire academic community.

“Criticism, input, and student aspirations remain an important part of strengthening campus governance,” he said.

However, Ishaq noted that the expression of student aspirations is expected to be fact-based and conveyed through open and constructive communication channels.

“The delivery of aspirations should be carried out responsibly, based on facts, and through open and constructive communication channels,” he stated.

Regarding the management of the SPPG on campus, the rectorate stated that it remains open to oversight and criticism, both from students and civil society.

“In relation to the issue of SPPG management on the Unhas campus, the rectorate remains open to oversight and criticism from students as well as other civil society components,” Ishaq said.
