Unhas asserts transformation direction as a globally impactful campus

Makassar (ANTARA) - Hasanuddin University (Unhas) has reaffirmed its transformative direction to become an influential, impactful, and world-class campus during the commemoration of its 70th Anniversary in Makassar.

In a statement in Makassar on Friday, the Rector of Unhas, Prof. Dr Jamaluddin Jompa (JJ), emphasised that higher education institutions must move beyond the function of producing expertise towards becoming institutions capable of providing real solutions for society and strengthening national resilience.

According to him, this transformation is reflected in the change in how Unhas evaluates institutional performance, moving from administrative achievements towards the measurement of real outcomes.

The success of a university is increasingly measured by the extent to which research results can be applied as economic solutions, patents can be commercialised, and graduates are absorbed into the formal workforce. This approach ensures that the academic process does not stop at the production of knowledge but continues through to its practical utilisation.

This impact is becoming more concrete through the application of Unhas research results within society. A total of 139 research outputs have been utilised directly, such as ‘Ayam Alope’ as a superior local chicken breed, ‘Jagung Jago’ as an adaptive maize to support food security, and ‘Drone Unhas’ as precision technology for regional mapping and disaster mitigation.

“This achievement demonstrates that the impact of research is measured by its ability to meet real needs, while simultaneously strengthening the role of Unhas in producing knowledge and innovation that is relevant to the community,” said Prof. JJ.

Regarding global academic reputation, he stated that this direction is progressing alongside the university’s improved position in the QS World University Rankings 2027, where Unhas has entered the 851–900 global bracket.

At the regional level, Unhas has also risen to 201st in the QS Asia University Rankings 2026. This position places Unhas at 57th in Southeast Asia and within the top 10 universities in Indonesia.

Furthermore, Prof. JJ added that the concept of ‘Impactful-World Class Unhas’ will be further realised through the integration of the ‘Tridarma Pergurante Tinggi’ (the three pillars of higher education) with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2026.
