Makassar (ANTARA) - Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas) and Hiroshima University are strengthening their sustainable marine research collaboration, particularly through the development of a joint Mangrove Restoration and Aquaculture project as a science and innovation-based coastal management model.

Unhas Rector Prof Dr Jamaluddin Jompa (JJ) said in Makassar on Wednesday that the programme is designed to integrate mangrove ecosystem restoration approaches with environmentally friendly productive aquaculture systems.

Prof JJ emphasised that mangrove restoration and aquaculture are strategic sectors highly relevant to Indonesia's character as an archipelagic nation. He noted that the collaboration could drive impactful research delivering direct benefits to communities and the environment.

Prof JJ further outlined a number of concrete steps Unhas has taken to strengthen the marine and fisheries sector, including the development of ice production facilities on Barrang Lompo Island to maintain the quality of fishermen's catches.

The initiative aims to produce fresher fish, increase market value, and strengthen the welfare of coastal communities through science and technology-based interventions.

"This cooperation is not only oriented towards academic outputs, but also towards lessons learned in integrated mangrove and aquaculture area management," he said.

"The model produced from the pilot project is expected to be replicable across various coastal regions in Indonesia," he added whilst receiving Hiroshima University Vice President for International Exchange and Japanese Language Education and Director of the Morito Institute of Global Higher Education, Kazuhiko Koike.

The Unhas Rector also stressed the importance of developing double degree programmes as part of accelerating campus internationalisation. In the context of the collaboration with Hiroshima University, he said Unhas is opening opportunities to utilise funding support from the Education Fund Management Institution (LPDP) to broaden student access to globally standardised education.

At the same occasion, Prof Kazuhiko Koike conveyed that Hiroshima University has a strong commitment to the development of sustainable marine and fisheries science.
