US President Donald Trump has stated that his administration is studying and reviewing the possibility of reducing troops in Germany. This statement comes as tensions rise with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz regarding the war against Iran.

“A decision” will be “made in the short time ahead,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform.

The announcement follows Trump’s condemnation of Merz after the German leader said the US was “humiliated by Iran’s leadership.”

Trump has also repeatedly criticised Germany and other NATO allies for not doing more to support the US-Israel war against Iran, including failing to deploy their navies to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Germany is one of the largest overseas bases for US troops, with around 33,900 soldiers stationed there.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Monday that Iran’s leadership is humiliating the United States. Iran made US officials travel to Pakistan and then leave without results. Merz also sees no exit strategy being pursued by the US in the Iran war.

“It’s clear that Iran is very skilled in negotiating, or more precisely, very skilled in not negotiating, letting America travel to Islamabad and then leave again without any results,” he said while speaking to students in the city of Marsberg, as reported by NDTV on Monday.

“The entire nation is humiliated by Iran’s leadership, especially by what is called the Revolutionary Guard. And therefore I hope this ends as soon as possible,” he added at the location in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
