UNGA Retains UNHRC as Subsidiary Body
The UN General Assembly (UNGA) decided on Monday (6/7) to maintain the status of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) as a subsidiary body of the UNGA, adopting a draft resolution titled “Status of the Human Rights Council” without a vote.
The UNGA also decided to review the status of the UNHRC, at the earliest during the 90th session and at the latest during the 95th session.
In the resolution, the UNGA recognised that peace and security, development, and human rights are the pillars of the UN system and the foundation for collective security and prosperity, acknowledging that development, peace, security, and human rights are interconnected and mutually reinforcing.
The UNGA also emphasised the importance of adequate and sustainable funding for the UNHRC and its mechanisms.
The UNHRC, established in 2006 by the UNGA and consisting of 47 member states, is an intergovernmental body within the UN system responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights worldwide, addressing situations of human rights violations, and providing recommendations regarding them.
