Unexpected Remarks from Deputy Minister on the Fate of Hotel Sultan After Eviction
Jakarta - The eviction of Hotel Sultan in the Senayan area of Central Jakarta was finally carried out on Thursday (18/6/2026). The move, which marks the culmination of a dispute between the government and PT Indobuildco, took place amid tight security and resistance that turned chaotic. Since morning, the Hotel Sultan area was filled with joint TNI and Polri personnel. Bailiffs from the Central Jakarta District Court, along with security officers, began entering the hotel area to execute the eviction order. At several points, masses claiming to be employees and sympathisers of Hotel Sultan attempted to hold out and resist the eviction before being pushed back. Amid the execution, the government stressed that its current main focus is reclaiming the asset, which according to a court ruling belongs to the state. However, the government has not yet determined the next steps for the Hotel Sultan building or the Sultan Residence after the eviction is complete. “We still don’t know at this point. For now, we are focusing on the eviction first,” said Deputy Minister of State Secretary (Wamensesneg) Bambang Eko Suhariyanto at Hotel Sultan on Thursday (18/6/2026). Meanwhile, the attorney for the Gelora Bung Karno Complex Management Centre (PPKGBK), Chandra M. Hamzah, assessed that the eviction marks the end of a very lengthy legal process. The dispute between the state and PT Indobuildco is said to have lasted around two decades before reaching the eviction stage. “The government complied with existing legal procedures. Previously, Indobuildco’s legal counsel claimed there was no eviction order. Now, I am holding them to account—the court order for eviction is now in place,” he explained. The long journey of the case shows that the government pursued all available legal avenues before requesting the court to carry out the eviction. Therefore, this eviction is a follow-up to a ruling that has obtained permanent legal force. “Because of that, today the Central Jakarta District Court will carry out the eviction,” he stated.
