As artificial intelligence adoption accelerates across various sectors in Indonesia, the urgency for understanding responsible and ethical use of the technology has become increasingly critical. In response, global online learning platform Coursera has officially partnered with UNESCO to launch the Global MOOC on the Ethics of AI. This free course, developed with LG AI Research, is now available in 11 languages, including Indonesian, to ensure broader accessibility. UNESCO previously established the first global standard through its framework on AI ethics, adopted by 193 countries. The course aims to help individuals and institutions translate these principles into practical action and strengthen ethical decision-making in AI utilisation. “Principles alone are not enough to build ethical AI; it is people who make it happen,” said Prof. Khaled El-Enany, Director General of UNESCO. He emphasised that the course represents a concrete step to transform the Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence into practical learning applicable at every stage of the AI lifecycle. Dr. Lim Woo-hyung, Co-Head of LG AI Research, noted that the real challenge lies in implementation, stating that ethics must be applied from product development to service operation. The curriculum, informed by insights from experts at institutions like Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Toronto, and the Alan Turing Institute, equips participants to identify ethical risks, balance priorities, and formulate measurable AI governance. The nine-hour programme is designed for a cross-sector audience and requires no specific technical background, covering key concepts such as privacy, transparency, sustainability, and human autonomy through various case studies. The course is now available for free on the Coursera platform.
